About the Partnership

The Smithsonian and Yale have deep ties that go back more than 150 years. From joint research expeditions to shared paleontological collections, the two institutions share a long tradition of collaboration. The Yale-Smithsonian Partnership was initiated in 2016 as a way to draw upon the institutions’ complementary strengths and to incubate innovative research and collaboration between the institutions. Since then, the partnership has grown to include internships and fellowships, faculty collaborations, courses, and programming.   Guided by a Memorandum of Understanding, the core areas that Yale and the Smithsonian are currently focusing their collaborative efforts include:

  1. Material Culture and Collections-Based Teaching and Research
  2. Environment and Climate Change
  3. Race and Human Diversity
  4. Digital Humanities
  5. Conservation and Preservation of Cultural Heritage

At Yale, the faculty co-chairs of the partnership are Tamar Gendler, Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science and David Skelly, Director of the Peabody Museum of Natural History.  Susan Gibbons, Deputy Provost, Collections & Scholarly Communication, provides administrative  oversight of the partnership.
